JD Salinger, 1919-2010

It's amazingly strange when one of the heavy hitters passes away. Of course his novel was a long-ago favorite; in my teenage years, I always gave a copy of it to male friends who "weren't readers," and they promised they enjoyed it, though that may have been to appease me.

I didn't know...but born in 1919, wow, that's a good long life. Thank you for your fine work Mr. Salinger.

I've known about him, of course, for most of my life, certainly since I was in my teenage years, though the fact is, I didn't get around to reading Catcher in the Rye until sometime in the past year or so. Prior to that the only thing I'd read of his was the story "Teddy" in Nine Stories, at some point or other when I was in high school (early 1970's).

I liked Catcher well enough, though it didn't totally sweep me away. It may be just the passage of years, or maybe the somewhat different world I grew up in, but I had a hard time getting what about the book some people have considered so shocking -- hard to imagine that it's one of the most banned books in the U.S. No figuring people sometimes.

The photo of him you've posted here is the first one I've seen of him. He looks like such a gentle man.
